The Gorce and Pieniny mountains are most famous for their summer hiking and river rafting, but winter transforms this region into something equally special. Snow-dusted peaks, quiet trails, affordable ski slopes, and the warmth of a mountain house with a crackling fireplace — a winter stay here is a different kind of magic.

Our house in the Gorce Mountains is perfectly placed for all of it, with ski slopes, trails, and thermal baths all within a short drive.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Szczawnica — Palenica Ski Resort

Distance from our house: approximately 15 minutes by car

Palenica is the closest ski area and a great option for families and intermediate skiers. The resort sits above Szczawnica with views across the Pieniny range.

What to expect:

  • Several ski runs of varying difficulty, from beginner-friendly greens to intermediate reds
  • Ski lifts and a chairlift
  • Equipment rental and ski school available on-site
  • Night skiing sessions on selected evenings
  • Cafés and restaurants at the base

Palenica is especially popular with families because the slopes are not overcrowded and the atmosphere is relaxed compared to larger resorts.

Dwie Doliny — Muszyna/Wierchomla

Distance from our house: approximately 40 minutes by car

For a bigger ski day, Dwie Doliny (Two Valleys) near Muszyna and Wierchomla offers more extensive terrain. This is one of the better-equipped resorts in the Beskid Sądecki range.

What to expect:

  • Longer and more varied runs
  • Modern lift infrastructure
  • Snowmaking equipment for reliable conditions
  • Ski rental, schools, and après-ski options
  • Better suited for confident intermediate and advanced skiers

Białka Tatrzańska & Bukowina

Distance from our house: approximately 50–60 minutes by car

If you want a full resort experience, the thermal springs and ski complexes in Białka Tatrzańska and Bukowina Tatrzańska are within reach for a day trip. These are larger commercial resorts with extensive slopes, water parks, and thermal pools — perfect for combining skiing with relaxation.

Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing

The Gorce Mountains are ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The rolling terrain, forest paths, and mountain meadows (polany) create beautiful routes away from crowds.

Where to Go

  • Gorce National Park offers marked winter trails through pristine beech and fir forests. The meadows (such as Polana Turbacz or the clearings near Lubań) provide open views and gentle terrain perfect for cross-country skiing.
  • Turbacz area: the highest peak in the Gorce (1,310 m) has trails that can be accessed in winter, though conditions vary — check with local guides.
  • Local forest roads around Kłodne and the surrounding villages are often used by cross-country skiers and snowshoe walkers after fresh snowfall.

Tips

  • Check conditions before heading out — trails are not always groomed
  • Snowshoe rental may be available in Szczawnica or from local outfitters
  • Start early for the best snow quality, especially on south-facing slopes
  • Bring warm drinks in a thermos — there are no mountain huts on most Gorce trails in winter

Winter Hiking

Winter hiking in the Gorce and Pieniny is a rewarding experience for those who enjoy quieter trails and snow-covered landscapes.

Best Winter Hikes

Lubań (1,211 m)

  • From our house: trailhead accessible within 15–20 minutes by car
  • Duration: 3–4 hours round trip
  • Why go: panoramic views from the summit meadow, especially on clear days — you can see the Tatras, Pieniny, and Beskidy ranges
  • Winter note: the trail can be icy in sections; trekking poles and microspikes are recommended

Gorce Ridge Walk

  • Several shorter sections of the Gorce ridge are accessible in winter
  • Forest cover provides shelter from wind
  • The beech forests are stunning under fresh snow

Pieniny in Winter

  • The Sokolica and Three Crowns trails are accessible in winter but require proper gear and caution due to exposed limestone sections
  • Far fewer visitors than in summer — an entirely different atmosphere
  • Check trail conditions with the national park office

Essential Winter Hiking Gear

  • Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support
  • Microspikes or light crampons for icy paths
  • Trekking poles
  • Layered clothing (moisture-wicking base, insulating mid-layer, windproof shell)
  • Headlamp — winter days are short
  • Warm hat, gloves, and a buff or scarf

Thermal Baths & Relaxation

After a day in the cold, warming up in thermal waters is a popular local tradition.

Nearby Options

  • Thermal baths in Białka Tatrzańska (about 50 minutes): multiple large thermal complexes with indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, and saunas. The most popular are Terma Bania and Bania Thermal Baths.
  • Szczawnica Mineral Springs: the town has a long spa tradition dating back to the 19th century. While not thermal pools, the mineral water park and treatment facilities offer a gentler form of winter relaxation.
  • Thermal complexes near Zakopane (about 1–1.5 hours): larger resort-style facilities if you want a full spa day trip.

Cozy Evenings at Our Mountain House

A winter holiday in the mountains is as much about what you do in the evenings as what you do during the day.

What awaits you at Daleko do Sufitu:

  • Fireplace: light a fire in the living room and let the evening unfold slowly
  • Fully equipped kitchen: cook warming soups, stews, or traditional bigos with ingredients from the local market
  • Board games and books: perfect for long winter evenings when the snow is falling outside
  • Mountain views from the terrace: even in winter, stepping outside with a hot drink to see the snow-covered peaks is a special moment
  • Kids' zone: children stay entertained indoors while parents relax

Winter Events & Local Traditions

The winter months bring local traditions and seasonal events to the region:

  • Christmas markets in nearby towns (December)
  • Highlander festivals featuring traditional music, food, and crafts
  • New Year's celebrations in Szczawnica and surrounding villages
  • Carnival and Fat Thursday — look for pączki (Polish doughnuts) at local bakeries in February

Planning Your Winter Stay

Best months for winter activities:

  • December–February: peak snow season, best for skiing and snowshoeing
  • Early March: still good snow at higher elevations, longer days, quieter slopes
  • Late November: early snow possible, peaceful and uncrowded

Road conditions: the roads to our house are maintained in winter, but we recommend winter tires or chains as a precaution. Our free parking area is cleared after snowfall.

What to pack: warm layers, waterproof outerwear, sturdy boots, and a sense of adventure. We provide warm bedding and heating throughout the house.

Winter in the Gorce and Pieniny mountains is a well-kept secret. Fewer tourists, lower prices, and a landscape that feels freshly made — it is the perfect season for those who want the mountains to themselves.
