Summer in the Gorce and Pieniny mountains is when these ranges give their most generous welcome. Long warm days, green trails, the turquoise waters of the Dunajec, and evenings scented with bonfire smoke — this is a holiday that stays with you for years.
Our house sits right between the Gorce and Pieniny ranges, putting both within a short drive. Here's what summer has in store.
Summer Calendar
June: The Quiet Start
June is the region's best-kept secret. Schools are still in session, the crowds haven't arrived, and the mountains are fully green. Temperatures are ideal for hiking (18–25°C), and evenings are pleasantly cool.
What to expect:
- Temperatures: 18–25°C by day, 10–15°C at night
- Long days — sunset after 9 PM
- Mountain meadows in full bloom
- Dunajec rafting already running, but without queues
- Perfect conditions for longer hikes
July: Peak Season
July is summer in full swing. The warmest temperatures, the longest days, and the widest selection of activities. It's also peak tourist season — popular trails and Dunajec rafting require advance planning.
What to expect:
- Temperatures: 22–30°C by day, 13–18°C at night
- Lake Czorsztyn reaches ideal swimming temperature
- All attractions and restaurants operating at full capacity
- Weekends can be crowded — plan hikes for weekdays or early mornings
August: The Golden Stretch
August combines July's warmth with the first hints of autumn toward the end of the month. Forests full of blueberries and mushrooms, evenings getting shorter but still warm and long.
What to expect:
- Temperatures: 20–28°C by day, 12–16°C at night
- Blueberry and mushroom season
- Last week of August — crowds thin out, prices drop
- Summer constellations visible to the naked eye, far from city lights
Best Summer Hiking Trails
1. Turbacz — Crown of the Gorce
Distance: 14 km (loop) Time: 5–6 hours Difficulty: Moderate
The highest peak in the Gorce (1,310 m) rewards you with a panorama spanning the Tatras, Pieniny, and Beskidy ranges. In summer the trail winds through lush meadows full of wildflowers. The PTTK mountain hut at the summit serves home-cooked food — smoked cheese with cranberries is a must.
Summer bonus: At dawn, the meadow below Turbacz fills with a sea of clouds hanging in the valleys.
2. Trzy Korony (Three Crowns) — Queen of the Pieniny
Distance: 6.5 km Time: 3–4 hours Difficulty: Moderate
The iconic Pieniny peak with a viewing platform at 982 m. In summer the trail is popular — set off before 8 AM to beat the crowds and the heat. The view of the Dunajec winding through its limestone canyon is worth every step.
Summer bonus: On the way back you can descend to the raftsmen's dock and return by river.
3. Homole Gorge
Distance: 3.5 km Time: 1.5–2 hours Difficulty: Easy
Perfect for hot days. The limestone gorge stays cool even when it's 30°C outside. The stream, mossy rocks, and ferns create a natural air conditioner. Great option with children.
4. Gorce National Park — Meadow Loop
Distance: 10 km Time: 4–5 hours Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
A trail linking several Gorce highland meadows — Jaworzyna, Turbaczyk, Rusnakowa. In summer, the meadows are a sea of flowers: bellflowers, arnica, orchids. Less crowded than the Pieniny classics.
Water — The Region's Summer Domain
Dunajec River Rafting
The region's icon. Wooden rafts steered by boatmen in traditional costumes float through the Pieniny Gorge — the most beautiful river canyon in Poland. Limestone walls rise up to 300 metres, and the raftsmen tell legends and jokes along the way.
Practical info:
- Season: May–October (peak: July–August)
- Duration: 2–2.5 hours
- Booking: in peak season, buy tickets a day ahead or online
- Our house is close to the Dunajec — you'll reach the dock in minutes
Lake Czorsztyn
A turquoise reservoir overlooked by the ruins of Czorsztyn Castle — 15 minutes' drive from our house. In summer it offers:
- Swimming beaches with sandy shores
- Kayaks and SUPs available for rental
- Sailing — marina in Kluszkowce
- Waterfront restaurants with castle views
Streams and Waterfalls
The Gorce are crossed by dozens of streams with clean mountain water. On hot days, locals cool off in natural pools — we recommend the stream in Kamienica and the Ochotnica area.
Summer Activities Beyond the Trails
Cycling
The region offers routes for every level:
- Dunajec riverside path (Krościenko–Szczawnica, 12 km) — flat, family-friendly
- Ochotnica valley loop (25 km) — moderate climbs, beautiful views
- Gorce forest roads — for the ambitious, with natural descents
Rock Climbing
The Pieniny offer several climbing sectors on limestone rock. The most popular — Sromowce Wyżne — has routes from 4a to 7a. Gear can be rented in Szczawnica.
Horse Riding
Several stables in the area offer rides along mountain paths and valleys. Options range from one-hour walks for beginners to full-day expeditions.
Foraging and Mushroom Picking
- July: Blueberries and wild raspberries on Gorce meadows
- August: Start of mushroom season — chanterelles, porcini, bay boletes
- Herbs: Wild thyme, oregano, and mint grow on mountain meadows
Evenings and Relaxation
By the Bonfire
A summer evening in the mountains without a bonfire is like a raft trip without a boatman. Our house has a bonfire spot in the garden — sausages, bread on a stick, and constellations overhead.
Fireplace for Cooler Evenings
Even in summer, mountain evenings can be cool (10–15°C). The fireplace in the living room turns those evenings into the best part of the day — a board game, a book, and crackling wood in the background.
Thermal Baths
After an active day, we recommend nearby thermal baths:
- Termy Bania (Białka Tatrzańska, 40 min) — thermal pools with Tatra views
- Termy Szaflary (35 min) — quieter, less crowded
- Szczawnica Zdrój — mineral water springs in a historic spa park
Local Festivals and Events
Raftsmen's Festival
An annual celebration of the rafting tradition with a boat parade, music, and regional food tastings.
Highland Markets
Weekend markets in Krościenko and Szczawnica — smoked cheese, bundz, honey, wood carvings, and live highland music.
Midsummer Night (Noc Świętojańska)
Around the summer solstice — traditional wreath floating, bonfires, and local rituals along the Dunajec.
Why Summer Here Is Different
Natural Air Conditioning
While cities swelter in the heat, the mountains keep temperatures 5–10°C lower. Evenings are always pleasantly cool, and sleeping with the window open to the sound of a stream is priceless.
Two Ranges, Endless Possibilities
Being located between the Gorce and Pieniny gives you double the choice: the wilder, forested Gorce one day, the dramatic, limestone Pieniny the next. You never get bored.
Close to the Dunajec
Our house is near the Dunajec — the river and its attractions (rafting, walking, cycling) are just minutes away. It's the river that defines the region, and in summer it's its beating heart.
What to Pack for a Summer Stay
- Comfortable hiking boots — trails can be rocky even in summer

- Light rain jacket — summer storms come fast

Plan Your Summer Stay
Summer in the Gorce and Pieniny runs from June to the end of August, but the best weeks (second week of June, last week of August) combine good weather with smaller crowds. July weekends book up well in advance — plan early.
Our house is the ideal base for a summer holiday — close enough to attractions that you don't waste time on the road, and far enough from the hustle to truly unwind.
