The Gorce-Pieniny region might not be the first name that comes to mind for skiing in Poland — and that's exactly what makes it special. While the crowds flock to Zakopane, you'll find excellent slopes, shorter lift queues, and lower prices at the ski resorts surrounding our mountain house.

From gentle nursery slopes perfect for beginners and children to challenging descents for experienced skiers, here's everything you need to plan your winter sports holiday from our base in Kłodne.

Best Ski Resorts Near Our House

1. Palenica — Szczawnica

Distance: 15 minutes (8 km) Best for: Beginners and families Season: December – March

The closest ski area to our house, Palenica is ideal for families and those learning to ski.

Facilities:

  • 3 ski lifts with gentle to intermediate slopes
  • Ski school with English-speaking instructors
  • Equipment rental on-site
  • Floodlit evening skiing available
  • Cafeteria with mountain views

Why we recommend it: It's 15 minutes from your door. You can ski in the morning and be back at the house for a late lunch by the fireplace.

2. Kluszkowce — Czorsztyn Ski

Distance: 20 minutes (15 km) Best for: Intermediate skiers, snowboarders, families Season: December – March

Overlooking Lake Czorsztyn, this resort offers more variety than Palenica with stunning lake and mountain views from every run.

  • 4 ski lifts including a modern chairlift
  • Varied terrain from gentle greens to steeper reds
  • Snowboard-friendly slopes
  • Alpine coaster (open year-round — a hit with kids)
  • Multiple restaurants and après-ski options

Why we recommend it: The views over Lake Czorsztyn while skiing are spectacular. The alpine coaster is a bonus attraction for non-skiing family members.

3. Wierchomla — Piwniczna-Zdrój

Distance: 35 minutes (30 km) Best for: Intermediate to advanced skiers Season: December – March

Wierchomla is the most serious ski resort in the immediate area, with longer runs, modern infrastructure, and reliable snow cover thanks to snowmaking equipment.

  • 6-person detachable chairlift
  • 6 runs totalling over 5 km, with the longest being over 1.5 km
  • Snowmaking on all runs
  • Ski school and equipment hire
  • Free parking

Why we recommend it: If you want proper skiing with varied terrain and modern facilities, Wierchomla is the pick. The 35-minute drive is well worth it.

4. Białka Tatrzańska — Kotelnica & Kaniówka

Distance: 40 minutes (35 km) Best for: All levels, largest ski area in the region Season: November – April

Białka Tatrzańska is the region's skiing capital with interconnected ski areas offering the most extensive terrain.

Facilities:

  • Multiple interconnected ski areas with 20+ lifts
  • Runs for every level from nursery to black
  • Extensive snowmaking ensures a long season

  • Ski schools, rental shops, and restaurants galore

Why we recommend it: This is where you go for a full-day ski experience. Combine it with a visit to Terma Bania thermal baths afterward for the ultimate winter day.

5. Szczawnica-Jaworki — Homole

Distance: 20 minutes (12 km) Best for: Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing Season: December – March (snow-dependent)

Beyond Downhill: Other Snow Activities

Snowshoeing

The Gorce National Park becomes a winter wonderland with well-marked snowshoe trails. Popular routes include:

  • Turbacz summit (1,310m) — the highest peak in Gorce, 4-5 hours round trip
  • Gorce meadows circuit — gentler terrain through highland clearings
  • Kłodne to Ochotnica valley — a scenic local route

Winter Hiking

Many Pieniny trails remain accessible in winter with proper footwear (crampons/microspikes recommended):

  • Dunajec River path — flat and sheltered, beautiful with snow
  • Czorsztyn Castle — shorter hike with frozen lake views
  • Three Crowns — challenging in winter but extraordinarily rewarding

Sledging & Tobogganing

Several resorts offer dedicated sledging runs. Kluszkowce's alpine coaster operates year-round and is especially fun in snow.

Ice Skating

Lake Czorsztyn occasionally freezes enough for skating (check local conditions). Some resorts also have outdoor ice rinks in season.

Planning Your Ski Trip

Equipment Rental

All major resorts offer rental equipment. For the best rates and fit:

  • Book online in advance during holiday periods
  • Rent in Szczawnica or Krościenko for slightly lower prices than resort shops
  • Children's equipment is widely available at all locations

Lessons

  • Ski schools operate at all main resorts
  • Private lessons available in English at Wierchomla and Białka Tatrzańska
  • Group lessons for children typically run 2 hours
  • Book in advance during holiday weeks

Compared to Western European resorts, skiing here is remarkably affordable. A full-day adult pass costs roughly:

  • Palenica: PLN 80–120
  • Kluszkowce: PLN 100–150
  • Wierchomla: PLN 120–170
  • Białka Tatrzańska: PLN 150–200

  • Most reliable snow: Wierchomla and Białka Tatrzańska (snowmaking)
  • Quietest slopes: Weekday mornings, especially in January
