One of the best things about staying in the Gorce Mountains is how much there is to do beyond hiking. The region around Pieniny, Lake Czorsztyn, and the Dunajec valley is packed with family-friendly attractions — medieval castles, underground caves, swimming lakes, and outdoor adventure parks, all within a short drive.
Here are our top 10 day trips for families, all easily reached from our house in Kłodne.
1. Niedzica Castle (Zamek Dunajec)
Distance: 25 minutes by car Best for: ages 4+
Perched dramatically above Lake Czorsztyn, Niedzica Castle is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in southern Poland. The castle dates back to the 14th century and has a rich history of border conflicts between Poland and Hungary.
What to expect:
- Guided tours of the castle interior with period furniture and historical exhibits
- Stunning views over the lake and the Pieniny mountains from the castle walls
- Legends of hidden Inca gold (a real historical mystery connected to the castle)
- A courtyard café for refreshments
- Gift shop with local souvenirs and historical items
Tips: the guided tour takes about an hour. Younger children may get restless toward the end, but the views and castle walls keep most kids engaged. Combined well with a visit to Lake Czorsztyn (see below).
2. Czorsztyn Castle Ruins
Distance: 20 minutes by car Best for: ages 5+
Directly across the lake from Niedzica sits the atmospheric ruins of Czorsztyn Castle. Unlike its better-preserved neighbor, Czorsztyn is an open ruin — which children often find more exciting to explore.
Highlights:
- Climbing up to the remaining towers and walls
- Panoramic views of the lake, dam, and Niedzica Castle opposite
- Less structured than Niedzica — kids can explore more freely
- A short, pleasant walk from the village parking area
- Occasional medieval-themed events and reenactments in summer
3. Lake Czorsztyn (Jezioro Czorsztyńskie)
Distance: 20 minutes by car Best for: all ages
This large artificial lake, created by the Niedzica Dam, is a beautiful spot for a family day out, especially in warm weather.
Activities:
- Swimming: designated swimming areas with sandy or grassy beaches
- Pedal boats and kayaks: rental available at several points around the lake
- Boat cruises: scenic cruises operate in summer, passing both castles
- Cycling: a partly completed cycling path circles sections of the lake — flat and easy for families
- Picnicking: plenty of grassy spots along the shore
Tips: the lake is popular on hot weekends. Arrive early to secure a good spot. Bring your own sunshade as natural shade is limited in some areas.
4. Homole Gorge (Wąwóz Homole)
Distance: 30 minutes by car Best for: ages 5+
This narrow limestone gorge near the village of Jaworki is a miniature adventure. The trail follows a stream through towering rock walls, crossing small bridges and passing through cool, shaded passages.
Why kids love it:
- It feels like walking through a canyon — dramatic and exciting
- The trail is short (about 1.5 km each way), so it suits younger legs
- In summer, the gorge is refreshingly cool
- Unique rock formations spark imagination
- A small waterfall at the end of the trail
Note: the trail involves some rocky sections and can be slippery when wet. Good shoes are essential.
5. Szczawnica Town & Promenade
Distance: 15 minutes by car Best for: all ages
Szczawnica is a charming old spa town nestled in the valley where the Grajcarek stream meets the Dunajec. It is a great stop for a relaxed afternoon.
Family-friendly highlights:
- Park Zdrojowy (Spa Park): a beautiful park with walking paths, fountains, and a playground
- Mineral water springs: free-flowing mineral springs where you can taste the local waters (they are an acquired taste, but kids find it fun)
- Ice cream and cafés: several good spots along the main promenade
- Playground areas: well-maintained play equipment for younger children
- Chairlift to Palenica: ride up for mountain views and hiking options, or just enjoy the ride
6. Bear Cave (Jaskinia Obłazowa)
Distance: 20 minutes by car Best for: ages 6+
Located near Nowa Biała, the Obłazowa Cave is a fascinating geological site where prehistoric artifacts, including a boomerang made from mammoth tusk, were discovered. While not a traditional show cave with stalactites, its historical significance is remarkable.
What makes it interesting:
- Archaeological site with evidence of human habitation from over 30,000 years ago
- Educational panels explaining the geological and historical significance
- The surrounding Obłazowa Rock is an impressive cliff formation
- Short walking trail around the site suitable for families
- Combines well with a visit to the Białka River area
7. Treetop Walk in Bachledowa Valley
Distance: approximately 50 minutes by car Best for: ages 3+
The Treetop Walk (Chodnik koronami drzew) in the Bachledowa Valley near Białka Tatrzańska is one of the most popular family attractions in the region.
What to expect:
- An elevated wooden walkway through the forest canopy, reaching heights of up to 24 meters
- A 28-meter-high observation tower with 360-degree views of the Tatras
- An exciting 50-meter tube slide at the end (optional)
- Educational stations about forest ecology along the way
- Accessible for strollers on the main walkway
Tips: very popular — visit on weekday mornings to avoid crowds. The walk takes about 45 minutes at a comfortable pace. Combine with a visit to the nearby thermal pools.
8. Wooden Churches of the Carpathians
Distance: varies (nearest 10–30 minutes) Best for: ages 7+ (or curious younger children)
The region is home to several historic wooden churches, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. These small, ornate buildings are architectural treasures.
Notable churches nearby:
- Dębno Podhalańskie (about 25 minutes): a 15th-century wooden church with original polychrome interior — remarkably well preserved
- Grywałd (about 20 minutes): another historic wooden church in a picturesque setting
- Several other churches in nearby villages
These are quiet, contemplative visits — best as a short stop combined with other activities rather than a standalone trip for very young children.
9. Cycling Along the Dunajec
Distance: trailheads within 10–15 minutes Best for: ages 6+ (cycling independently) or younger with child seats
The Dunajec Valley offers gentle cycling routes perfect for families. The paths follow the river through villages and farmland with mountain views in every direction.
Routes to try:
- Krościenko to Szczawnica: a flat, easy route along the river (about 6 km one way)
- Lake Czorsztyn circuit: partly completed cycling path with lake and castle views
- Village roads around Kłodne: quiet, low-traffic roads suitable for family cycling
Practical notes:
- Bike rental is available in Szczawnica and Krościenko
- E-bike rental is becoming increasingly available
- The routes are mostly flat or gently rolling — no serious hills
- Bring water, snacks, and sunscreen
10. Cheese-Making Workshops & Highland Culture
Distance: various locations within 15–30 minutes Best for: ages 4+
The Gorce and Pieniny region has a living highland culture centered on sheep farming and traditional cheese-making. Several local shepherds and farms offer hands-on experiences.
What you might find:
- Oscypek demonstrations: watch (and taste) traditional smoked sheep's cheese being made in a bacówka (mountain hut)
- Highland food tasting: try bundz, żentyca (sheep's milk whey drink), and other mountain specialties
- Farm visits: some local farms welcome visitors to meet sheep, goats, and other animals
- Cultural events: summer brings folk festivals with traditional music, dance, and food
Tips: oscypek season runs from late spring through autumn when sheep are in the mountain pastures. Ask us for current recommendations — the best experiences are often informal and not widely advertised.
Planning Your Days
With so many options, we recommend mixing active and relaxed days. A typical family week might look like:
- Day 1: settle in, explore the village and nearby forest trails
- Day 2: Dunajec raft trip + Szczawnica promenade
- Day 3: Castle day — Niedzica and Czorsztyn with lake swimming
- Day 4: Hiking (choose a trail that matches your family's fitness level)
- Day 5: Homole Gorge in the morning, cycling in the afternoon
- Day 6: Treetop Walk + thermal baths (great day trip to Białka Tatrzańska area)
- Day 7: Relax at the house — garden, kids' zone, BBQ
Our house has a dedicated kids' zone with indoor play equipment and an outdoor playground in the garden, so there is always something to do between outings. The fully equipped kitchen means you can prepare meals at home, and our terrace with mountain views is where every evening should end.
