Floating down the Dunajec River on a traditional wooden raft is one of the most unforgettable experiences in southern Poland. The route winds through the dramatic limestone gorge of Pieniny National Park, with towering cliffs rising up to 300 meters on both sides. It is one of the oldest tourist attractions in Europe, running since the mid-19th century — and for good reason.

Our mountain house sits just 20 minutes from the starting point, making it the perfect base for a day on the water.

How the Dunajec Raft Trip Works

The traditional raft trip uses flat-bottomed wooden vessels, each operated by two highlander raftsmen in traditional folk costumes. These are not rapids — the Dunajec is a calm, scenic float where you sit back and take in the views while the raftsmen steer and share local stories and legends.

Each raft holds about 10–12 passengers. The rafts are tied together in pairs, creating a stable platform that feels safe even for young children.

The Route

There are two main routes available:

Full Route: Sromowce Kąty to Szczawnica

  • Distance: approximately 18 km
  • Duration: 2 to 2.5 hours
  • Highlights: the full gorge experience, passing beneath Three Crowns Peak and through the narrowest sections of the canyon

Shorter Route: Sromowce Kąty to Krościenko

  • Distance: approximately 8 km
  • Duration: about 1 hour
  • Highlights: a condensed version ideal for younger children or limited schedules

Starting Point

The main departure point is in Sromowce Kąty, which is about a 25-minute drive from our property. There is a large parking area, ticket office, and basic facilities at the embarkation point.

When to Go

The rafting season typically runs from April through October, with the busiest months being July and August.

Best times to visit:

  • May and June: pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, lush green scenery
  • September: beautiful early autumn colors, comfortable weather, shorter lines
  • July–August: peak season with the warmest weather, but expect longer wait times

Morning departures are recommended for the shortest queues and the best light for photographs. Aim to arrive before 9:00 AM during peak season.

Weather Considerations

The trip runs in most weather conditions, but can be cancelled during heavy rain or when water levels are dangerously high. On cooler days, bring a light jacket — the gorge can be several degrees cooler than the surrounding area. On hot days, sunscreen and a hat are essential as there is limited shade on the raft.

Practical Tips for Families

The Dunajec raft trip is one of the most family-friendly activities in the Pieniny region. Here is what parents should know:

  • Age suitability: children of all ages are welcome, and infants can ride on a parent's lap
  • Safety: life jackets are available, and the water is calm — this is not white-water rafting
  • Restrooms: facilities are available at the starting point, but there are no stops along the route
  • Snacks: pack water and snacks, especially for the full-length route
  • Strollers: leave them in the car — they cannot be taken on the raft

Getting Back to Your Car

At the end of the trip in Szczawnica (or Krościenko), shuttle buses and minivans run regular return services to the parking area in Sromowce Kąty. The return journey takes about 20–30 minutes by road.

Alternatively, if you are a hiking enthusiast, you can walk back along the marked trail through Pieniny National Park — a beautiful 2 to 3 hour hike that follows the ridge above the gorge.

What Makes This Trip Special

The Dunajec River Gorge is often compared to miniature versions of much larger canyons. The limestone walls, carved over millennia, create an intimate and dramatic landscape unlike anywhere else in Central Europe.

Highlights along the route:

  • Three Crowns Peak (Trzy Korony): the most iconic mountain in Pieniny, visible from the raft
  • Sokolica Pine: the famous lone pine tree growing from a cliff face, featured on postcards
  • The Narrows: where the gorge walls close in to just 100 meters apart
  • Slovak border: the Dunajec forms the natural border between Poland and Slovakia — you float along the border for most of the route
  • Wildlife: look for kingfishers, herons, and trout in the crystal-clear water

Combining with Other Activities

A day at the Dunajec pairs well with other attractions nearby:

  • Hike Three Crowns Peak before or after your raft trip from the nearby Sromowce Niżne trailhead
  • Visit Niedzica Castle (Zamek Dunajec), a beautifully preserved medieval castle overlooking Lake Czorsztyn, just a short drive from the embarkation point
  • Explore Szczawnica at the end of your float — this charming spa town has cafés, restaurants, and a lovely promenade along the river
  • Swim at Lake Czorsztyn on hot days — the lake is 15 minutes from the starting point

How to Book

Tickets can be purchased at the embarkation point in Sromowce Kąty. During peak season, it is worth arriving early as the queues can be substantial. Some travel agencies in the area also offer packages that include transport.

Useful information:

  • No advance online booking is needed for standard rafts — tickets are sold at the pier
  • Group discounts may be available for larger parties
  • The ticket covers the raft trip only — return transport is a separate purchase
